One of the happiest experiences of my life from about age 10 to 14 was going to a summer camp where nobody cared if you went barefoot all season long! Getting "lost" in the woods barefoot was an absolute delight. These days, barefoot-friendly camps are hard to find. Camp Chatuga is one of them. From their brochure: "Swimsuits are not worn in the dining hall. Shirts must be worn. You may go barefoot except at certain activities that require shoes."
